In an emergency situation it is essential you know the order of priority in which things need to be carried out. This course is designed to provide you with two of the essential and necessary skills for a greater chance of survival in the wilderness.
FIRE LIGHTING SKILLS
Fire lighting is a fundamental skill and is vital for survival. A fire provides warmth, a place to cook or boil water as well as a focal point for the camp. During this session you will be shown various methods of fire lighting techniques including:
- Cutting tool Safety
- Safe cutting Techniques
- Natural Tinder
- Man-Made Tinder
- Use of Chemicals
- Fire Lays
- Producing a Spark
Water is essential for survival and its priority is second to air. We rely on it heavily as depending on gender 45-75% of our body fluid is water. Water is vital to organ function and regulates body temperature. During this session you will learn about the following:
- The importance of conserving Water
- The effects of Dehydration
- Finding Water
- Water Collection
- 5 Basic Contaminants
- Purifying Water
- Constructing a pot hangar
- Boiling water
There will be a Practical element to this session where you can implement your new found skills and have a go at purifying some water.

Maximum Participants: 12 people.
Minimum Participants: 2 People (this may vary from time to time)
Tea Coffee and Squash will be provided for the day.
You will need to bring lunch with you as no food will be supplied during the course
There will be a campfire if you wish to cook your own lunch, but you will need to provide your food and bring cooking equipment .
CAN I TAKE PART?
- Age 8+. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult (18+).
- Suitable for individuals, families, groups of friends, scouting & guiding groups and other youth groups.
- Skills needed – Simply be a good listener!
WHAT DO I BRING?
All of the clothing and equipment that you bring must be appropriate to the environment and the time of year. Otherwise you risk putting your health in danger.
This course will go ahead even in adverse weather. So pack sensibly.
- Individual First Aid Kit
- Antibacterial Hand Sanitiser
- Water Bottle 1L minimum (Juice Bottle will be adequate)
- Insect repellant spray
- Sensible footwear for the woodlands
- Sunglasses / Hat (for summer)
- Thermals / gloves / Hat (for winter)
- Notebook and pen
